WOOLWICH
The Sagadahoc County Sheriff ’s Department arrested one of two suspects who allegedly invaded a Middle Road home and assaulted a resident early Sunday morning.
Chief Deputy Brett Strout said the alleged home invasion occurred at 3:52 a.m. Witnesses in the house at the time of the incident identified one of the suspects, which led to the arrest of Bryan Z. Chaput, 22, of 11 Adams Court in Bath, who was charged with Class B burglary and Class D assault.
Strout said Chaput allegedly attended a party Saturday night at a different address in Woolwich, where he reportedly saw a former girlfriend with another man. Chaput apparently got upset and vandalized the former girlfriend’s vehicle.
Strout said investigators believe Chaput and another unknown male later broke into a home on Middle Road “to clear things up … or get even with this other party,” Strout said, referring to the other male who was at the party with Chaput’s ex-girlfriend.
Chaput and the other suspect allegedly went to confront the man who was with Chaput’s former girlfriend, but they entered “the wrong bedroom” and assaulted the man’s brother instead, another adult male, who was awoken and taken by surprise.
As the victim was being punched and having bottles thrown at him, he took a gun from a drawer next to his bed and fired two warning shots, which reportedly scared the suspects. They ran, and the victim chased them out of the house, firing more shots as they ran out the door.
According to a press release from the sheriff ’s department, the two suspects couldn’t be located in the area following the incident, but Chaput turned himself in the following day at the sheriff ’s office. Deputy Adam Temple interviewed Chaput and arrested him. He was transported to Two Bridges Regional Jail in Wiscasset. The sheriff ’s department continues to seek the second suspect involved in the home invasion.
Also responding to the incident with Temple were Cpl. Ian Alexander and officers from the Bath Police Department including Patrol Officer Brett McIntire.
The incident remains under investigation and further charges are expected, according to Strout.
Following the home invasion Sunday morning, an alarmed woman who lives at the residence called her son, Strout said. As a result, the son rushed home, but was stopped on Route 1 in Woolwich by Deputy Matt Shiers at 4:12 a.m.
As a result of the traffic stop, Shiers arrested Matthew Lund, 23, of the same residence on Middle Road, on charges of operating after suspension, failing to stop for a law enforcement officer, and criminal speed. He was taken to Two Bridges Regional Jail.
