To the editor:

I am seeing a new and exciting development: civility in public discourse.

Granted that the old political hacks are indulging as never before in what seems to be an epidemic of contemptuous speech, I am not hearing this from the young activists, who seem to be resisting all temptations to start slinging mud — or even using adversarial language.

It’s not actually a new idea, but one that has not been much in evidence for a long time — see Martin Luther King Jr., Mahatma Ghandi, Nelson Mandela, etc.

Most of them are ancient history by now, but I believe that, from wherever they may be, they must be breathing inspiration into a new generation of activists. I am finding this tremendously encouraging.
