Bates junior David Pless placed third in the discus throw on Thursday at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Claremont, Calif.
Pless earned his fifth career All-America honor with his throw of 173 feet, 11 inches.
• Southern Maine freshman Hannah Wiley finished 10th in the long jump, setting a school record of 18-9.
FOOTBALL
NFL: The Minnesota Vikings bagged the last political victory necessary for their new stadium when the Minneapolis City Council narrowly approved the plan.
The 7-6 vote fell along the same lines as a preliminary vote a day earlier.
Minneapolis is putting up $150 million for construction of the $975 million stadium, plus $159 million in operating costs later. The city will shift hospitality taxes that currently pay debt on the city convention center.
• The Bengals signed Wisconsin guard Kevin Zeitler to a four-year deal, putting both of their first-round picks under contact.
CYCLING
GIRO D’ITALIA: Roman Kreuziger won the 19th stage that ended in Val di Fiemme, Italy, and Joaquin Rodriguez retained the overall lead. With a superb final climb, Kreuziger finished the penultimate mountain leg of the Giro in 6 hours, 18 minutes and 2 seconds. Ryder Hesjedal was 19 seconds behind. Rodriguez finished third. His advantage over Hesjedal in the overall standings was down to 17 seconds.
SOCCER
NATIONAL TEAM: Forward Juan Agudelo, defender Alfredo Morales and midfielders Danny Williams and Graham Zusi were cut as U.S. Coach Jurgen Klinsmann picked his 23-man roster for upcoming exhibition games and World Cup qualifiers.
TENNIS
OPEN DE NICE: American qualifier Brian Baker outlasted Nikolay Davydenko 6-7 (5), 6-4, 6-2 to advance to the final in Nice, France. The 216th-ranked Baker will face Nicolas Almagro, who beat Gilles Simon 6-1, 6-3 in the other semifinal.
BELGIAN OPEN: Top-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska beat Kaia Kanepi 7-6 (8) 6-3 to set up a championship match against Simona Halep in Brussels, Belgium. The third-ranked Radwanska trailed 5-1 in the first set, but saved two set points and fought back to win.
