BOWDOINHAM — The Long Branch School of Maine will celebrate the grand opening of its new blacksmith shop at 11 a.m. Saturday at 20 Main St.

The celebration will include demonstrations from the blacksmith instructors all day long, according to a Long Branch release about the event.

“Our new blacksmith shop brings a unique addition to the Long Branch School’s course offerings, and we will begin with a ‘Beginner Blacksmith Series’ on Saturday, May 26 and continuing each Saturday throughout the summer,” the release states. “The blacksmith series is designed to teach the fundamentals of the trade, and each four-hour hands-on morning class will be followed by an optional open forge time in the afternoon affording students the opportunity to practice the skills they’ve learned under the supervision of one of our blacksmith instructors.”

Additional activities will begin at 4 p.m. Saturday and will include a presentation by local author Samantha Ricker Goad on her new book, “The Conscious Consumer: Your Guide to Sustainable Maine Living.”

According to the book jacket, Ricker-Goad’s book “contains the who, what, why and how to purchase and use foodstuff and other consumables carefully but rationally in an increasingly complex world.”
