Heroux receives Principals’ Award at Bonny Eagle

Riley Heroux of Buxton has been honored with the Bonny Eagle High School’s 2012 MPA Principals’ Award.

The award is sponsored by the Maine Principals’ Association and is given in recognition of a high school senior’s academic achievement and citizenship.

“Riley is an outstanding student and school leader,” said Principal Beth Schultz in making the award.

Heroux is the president of the Student Council, a member of the National Honor Society, Spanish Honor Society and Key Club, and served as class treasurer for several years. Heroux was instrumental in working with the Student Council, students and the administration to develop workable guidelines for dances at BEHS. She was diplomatic, listened to all sides of the issue, and helped everyone to reach consensus, Schultz said.

With a GPA of 4.4, Heroux excels in school, especially in the field of science. She plans to major in pre-med when she attends Northeastern University in Boston this fall. She served as a junior volunteer at Maine Medical Center in Portland. Heroux aspires to be a pediatrician, and, said Schultz, has the drive and determination to make that happen.

In addition to her academic achievements, Heroux participated on both the varsity swim team and the lacrosse team for the past three years. Heroux is active in all areas of school life and exemplifies Scot Pride, Schultz said.

“It has been a pleasure to work with Heroux this year. She certainly inspires others to do their best,” said Schultz.

The Principals’ Award is presented to more than 140 public and private high schools by member principals of the MPA, the professional association that represents Maine’s school administrators.

Buxton Girl Scouts good deeds

Daisy Girl Scouts from Troop 1752 in Buxton spent the year doing good deeds to celebrate 100 years of Girl Scouts and to earn the 100 Good Deeds patch.

Cindy Gaudiano and Holly Hall, co-leaders, are bringing the meaning of Girl Scouts to their troop by having the girls focus on community service projects and learn for themselves what it means to give to others.

In September, the troop with 10 first-graders developed a list of community service projects. Even though the patch is earned for individual efforts, the troop decided to complete 1,000 acts of community service together.

So far, the troop has completed 500 good deeds.

The girls recycled plastic bags, made holiday cards for the troops, donated toys to the Buxton Toy Box and made and delivered Valentine cards to nursing home residents in Gorham. They made dog biscuits and catnip toys for the Animal Refuge League, as well as donated toys, bones, food and other supplies.

They donated food items to the Ronald McDonald House and personal hygiene supplies to the Buxton Co-op.

According to troop leaders, the community service project they had the most fun with was the Birthday in a Bag project started by a troop in Kansas. The girls donated 10 birthday bags to the York County Homeless Shelter. The bags contained items such as balloons, streamers, plates, cake mix, frosting, invites, a gift and more that could be used to celebrate a child’s birthday.
