TOPSHAM
Topsham Fire Department crews responded Saturday afternoon to a report that smoke was filling the Target store in the Topsham Fair Mall.
Customers and staff evacuated.
Fire Chief Brian Stockdale said it is normal policy when a fire alarm is pulled to evacuate the building until fire crews can determine the origin of the concern. Firefighters determined that problems with a motor in one of the compressor units caused the smoke.
Crews terminated power to the unit, isolated the problem, then used a large fan to ventilate the building and made sure the store’s maintenance company was notified to come and fix the problem.
The situation involved strictly smoke and no fire, Stockdale said.
