BRUNSWICK

The Brunswick Village Review Board sponsors a variety of activities during May in observance of National Historic Preservation Month.

“The theme for this year’s events is ‘Brunswick’s Hidden Gems,’ focusing on parts of Brunswick’s built environment that are architecturally or historically important, even if their significance is not immediately obvious,” a release from the board states.

Historic Preservation Month activities begin at 10 a.m. May 12 with a “Brunswick’s Hidden Gems” Walking Tour of Fort Andross and nearby Brunswick 250th Anniversary Park. Brunswick archaeologist and historian Fred Koerber will lead the tour.

“Some gems can be hidden in plain sight,” Koerber said in the release. “For generations the extensive granite outcropping by the last set of falls on the Androscoggin has served as a natural edifice, anchoring Brunswick’s Maine Street, hosting an ethnic community, serving as a commercial hub, offering protection to those seeking to settle in the early frontier, and providing a place where Native peoples gathered to fish. Each day hundreds of folks pass this common location not knowing its special history. Our tour will bring to light this ‘crown jewel’ of Brunswick’s past.”

The tour will begin outside the main entrance of Fort Andross.

Ongoing throughout May is a “Brunswick’s Hidden Gems” Photo Exhibit, which will be on display at the Curtis Memorial Library from Friday through May 31.

The exhibit will include photos submitted for a contest sponsored by the Village Review Board in conjunction with the Brunswick Department of Recreation and The Times Record. The photos must depict any part of Brunswick’s built environment that the artist considers to be a hidden gem. Entries will be accepted through Thursday.

Entry forms can be obtained at the Brunswick Recreation Center or the Planning Office on Federal Street. Winning photos will be published in The Times Record.

Also ongoing throughout the month will be an occasional Brunswick’s Hidden Gem photo series in The Times Record.

For more information about all activities, call the Brunswick Planning Department at 725-6660.

The Village Review Board is a volunteer citizen board appointed by the Town Council and charged with maintaining the historical and architectural integrity of the downtown historic district through design review, landmark designation, and educational programs.
