AUGUSTA (AP) — A U.S. Senate committee has approved the nomination of Cape Elizabeth attorney William Kayatta Jr. to serve on the 1st U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.
Sen. Susan Collins of Maine says the Senate Judiciary Committee approved the nomination Thursday. Collins, a Maine Republican, introduced Kayatta at the committee’s hearing last month.
Collins says Kayatta is highly qualified for the post. He graduated magna cum laude from both Amherst College and Harvard University. After law school, he was clerk for the chief judge of the 1st U.S. Circuit Court, Frank Coffin.
Kayatta’s nomination now proceeds to the Senate floor for a final vote.
