SOUTH CASCO – A Casco man was arrested on multiple charges Monday following a domestic violence assault and high-speed accident on Route 302.

According to the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office, Matthew Burnham, 20, of 21 Shadow Lane, crashed a 2006 Dodge Caravan that belonged to the unidentified victim of the assault while driving at speeds exceeding 80 mph along Route 302 in South Casco.

Burnham fled his home after the victim called 911 at 11:50 a.m. While deputies were responding to the residence, police say Burnham drove away from the home and picked up speed after passing by the oncoming deputies.

Burnham is being charged with domestic violence assault, obstructing a crime to be reported, criminal mischief, unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, criminal speed and operating without a license.

Police said the assault victim did not require medical attention, though Burnham was transported to Bridgton Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries when he lost control of the minivan near the South Casco Post Office and flipped end-over-end, coming to rest against a parked Chevy Avalanche at 315 Roosevelt Trail.

Police said Burhnam was not being followed by deputies at the time of the crash, which occurred at 12:07 p.m. Burnham was trapped in the vehicle, requiring extrication by Casco Fire/EMS. No other individuals were involved in the crash.
