Three players atop the leaderboard following first round at RBC Heritage

Chad Campbell used a fast start, and Vaughn Taylor and Colt Knost had strong finishes to share the first-round lead at 4-under 67 in the RBC Heritage at Hilton Head Island, S.C.

Campbell birdied four of his first seven holes, Knost birdied three of his last five, and Taylor holed out from the fairway for a closing eagle on the par-4 ninth hole.

Campbell held steady on a windy, unseasonably cool morning at Harbour Town Golf Links. Campbell and Knost got going as conditions softened in the afternoon.

MALAYSIAN OPEN: Charl Schwartzel of South Africa shot an 8-under 64 to take a one-stroke lead over Jeev Milkha Singh of India after the first round at Kuala Lumpur.

COLLEGE

WOMEN’S LACROSSE: Cassie Diplock had five goals and an assist to lead St. Joseph’s to a 12-9 victory against Thomas at Waterville.

Amelia Santos added a goal and three assists for the Monks (7-4), who led 8-5 at the half. Jennifer Day scored three goals for the Terriers (4-4).

MEN’S BASKETBALL: Northern Arizona hired Memphis assistant Jack Murphy as coach.

n Villanova junior guard Dominic Cheek will forgo his final season of eligibility and enter his name in the NBA draft.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL: Ali Jaques was hired as the Siena coach.

CENTRAL FLORIDA: School officials will be in Indianapolis on today for a hearing with the NCAA to determine whether the school’s self-imposed penalties are sufficient following an investigation into major recruiting violations within its football and basketball programs.

AUTO RACING

INDYCAR: Chevrolet’s strong start in its return to IndyCar suffered a significant setback when the manufacturer decided to change the engines for all 11 of its teams before they open the weekend at Long Beach, Calif.

The change means all 11 Chevrolet drivers will drop 10 spots on the starting grid before Sunday’s race under an IndyCar rule that prohibits engine changes before each one has completed 1,200 miles. The mileage minimum would have been reached Sunday in the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach.

FORMULA ONE: The governing body said the Bahrain Grand Prix will go ahead as planned April 22 despite ongoing political instability in the country and threats by some groups to disrupt the event.

U.S. CLAY COURT: Qualifier Michael Russell took advantage of the ailing Mardy Fish for a 6-3, 6-1 victory in the second round at Houston.

Fish, the top seed in the tournament and ranked ninth in the world, was playing for the first time since pulling out of Davis Cup competition against France for what he called a health issue.

GRAN PRIX HASSAN II: Jeremy Chardy of France upset top-seeded Florian Mayer of Germany 6-3, 6-1 in the second round at Casablanca, Morocco.

BARCELONA OPEN: Third-seeded Dominika Cibulkova rallied for a 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 victory against Klara Zakopalova to reach the quarterfinals.

SOCCER

WORLD CUP: A strike by workers in Brazil stopped construction at a World Cup stadium in Salvador, the third host city affected by strikes this month.

Work was halted at the Fonte Nova stadium a day after workers voted to remain on strike in Fortaleza and Natal, two other World Cup venues in the northeast part of the country.

EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIP: Michel Platini, the ptresident of the European governing body, urged Ukrainian authorities to prevent “bandits and crooks” from charging fans attending the event exorbitant prices for hotel accommodation.

WRESTLING

ANGLE OUT: Kurt Angle, a former Olympic gold medalist and WWE star, said he’s pulling out of next week’s U.S. Olympic team trials in Iowa.

Angle, 43, was planning to compete for a spot on the U.S. freestyle team headed to the London Games this summer. But he said on his Twitter page that hamstring and knee injuries forced him to pull out of the trials.
