BRUNSWICK — The Bowdoin College baseball and softball teams are back home after successful Florida trips, with both teams scheduled to jump into action this weekend.

The softball team travels to Tufts beginning today with a single game (doubleheader on Saturday) in a big Eastern Division New England Small College Athletic Conference series, while the baseball team is home against Wesleyan at revamped Pickard Field on Saturday (noon doubleheader), and visits the University of Southern Maine on Sunday at 1 p.m.

Mike Connolly’s squad went 10-6 on its annual Florida trip.

“The trip went great, but we certainly left a couple wins on the table,” said Connolly, whose squad began the excursion 7-1. “From top to bottom, we pitched great and our defense was pretty good. At the plate, we never really got going. We weren’t bad, but never stayed hot.”

On the mound, the trio of Christian Martin ( 3-0, 1.69 earned-run average), Oliver Van Zant (2-0, 1.45 ERA) and Tim Welch (1- 0, 0.00 ERA) were superb, according to Connolly. In all, the Polar Bears posted a 2.55 team ERA and received four saves from closer Ian Edwards (0-1, 1.50 ERA) and two from Henry Van Zant (0-2, 4.50 ERA).

“Christian and Oliver were dominant, consistent, and we knew each time they took the ball we had a real good chance of coming out on top,” said Connolly, who discussed watching Welch like a parent after the senior had Tommy John surgery 16 months ago, forcing him to sit out his junior year. “I knew how hard Tim had worked. In his first start, I was a fan when I gave him the ball. I believe he is better now than he was before the injury. He is more mature and has a much better feel for the game.”

At the plate, catcher Dan Findley had a solid trip, leading the team with a .423 batting average, five doubles and 16 RBIs. Outfielder Tim McGarry (.333 batting average, three triples, 12 RBIs), outfielder Kyle LeBlanc (.321, nine runs scored) and shortstop Jordan Edgett (.262, nine runs scored) helped the Polar Bears to a .293 team batting average.

With the team back home and the temperatures more Maine-like this week, Connolly feels his squad will benefit.

“We have real good pitching and our defense is solid, which plays into the cooler temperatures, with our pitchers poised to attack the strike zone,” said Connolly, who said Martin and Welch will start on Saturday against Wesleyan (7-8 during its Arizona trip), while Oliver Van Zant is the scheduled starter on Sunday against USM, which is currently 6-7 after four consecutive losses.

Hurler Melissa DellaTorre was sensational in leading the Polar Bears to a solid 12-4 mark in Florida.

DellaTorre appeared in nine games, posting a 7-1 record, one save and a paltry 1.29 ERA. She struck out 56 batters in 54.1 innings, permitting just 30 hits and 10 earned runs with 15 walks.

DellaTorre’s efforts helped Bowdoin post a 2.67 team ERA down south, with hurlers Tricia Thibodeau (3-3, 4.24 ERA) and Nancy Walker ( 2-0, 3.96 ERA) each seeing variances of success.

At the plate, outfielder Gen Barlow was a hitting machine. She led the Polar Bears with a .460 batting average, with three home runs, 18 RBIs, eight doubles and two triples. She also had an .880 slugging percentage.

Catcher Casey Correa (.333, 14 RBIs), outfielder Caroline Dewar (.327, 11 runs scored), outfielder Hillary Smyth (. 321, 16 runs scored, eight RBIs) and second baseman Amy Hackett (.311, 13 runs scored, four triples, eight RBIs) led the way as Bowdoin produced a team .294 batting average.

Last year, Bowdoin took two of three in a home series with Tufts, which stands at 11-3 after its trip to Florida. However, an opening Eastern Division series at Trinity saw the Polar Bears lose two of three, eventually costing them a NESCAC playoff spot.
