To the editor:
I write in response to the letter from Gerald Barlow titled “Tax demon alcohol,” which was published March 8.
Back in 1994, I joined the Americorps “ Victim Assistance” program. All I did was help people to obtain restraining orders and work with them throughout the court process.
Barlow asked a local police officer how many of their domestic violence calls involved alcohol. His guess was 75 percent.
In my experience, the percentage was far greater. Let’s say around 90 percent. I can guarantee that things haven’t gotten much better.
As food for thought: In my one-year term, I never once had anyone come into my office saying that his or her significant other smoked large amounts of marijuana, and then proceeded to beat the crap out of them.
Just sayin’.

Topsham

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
