PORTLAND — Portland police are asking motorists to avoid the intersection of Washington Avenue and Canco Road this afternoon and evening because of a gas leak.

The leak was reported at about 3:30 p.m. and utility workers are at the scene working to repair it. However, the intersection can be troublesome even on a normal day at commuter hours.

Police ask that motorists avoid the area and seek alternate routes to their destination.
