BRUNSWICK — Arctic birds will be in the spotlight with activities for the whole family at the Peary- MacMillan Arctic Museum’s annual Family Day event Saturday on the Bowdoin College campus.
The free event, “From Talons to Tail Feathers: All about Amazing Arctic Birds,” runs from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in Hubbard Hall.
Participants can learn how some birds change color, how to make mobiles and collages of snowy owls and puffins, and how to design imaginary birds using found objects, according to a release.
“Arctic birds are adapted to live in a cold, snowy environment,” the release states. “The ptarmigan, for example, changes its color from brown in the summer to white in the winter. Kids will learn how to use a special crayon-resistant technique to paint a ptarmigan camouflaged in the snow.”
They will also have a chance to make a mobile of a snowy owl, use their own hand prints to create the majestic image of a gyrfalcon and make a tissue-paper collage of a puffin with a vividly colored beak, among other activities.
