LAKES REGION – Old Man Winter hasn’t been as ornery as usual this year, and the mild temps have played havoc with Lakes Region area winter events.

This weekend, for example, was supposed to play host to the 12th annual Sebago Lake Rotary Ice Fishing Derby. However, with little ice on Sebago, the derby was canceled two weeks ago. Earlier this week, organizers cited lack of ice for cancellation of Sunday’s annual Snowmobile Speed Run, which routinely sees state records being broken by fast-flying snow machines hurtling down a smooth track.

But other events, including the popular Polar Ice Dip off Raymond Beach and the Kid’s Derby on Range Pond, are still on as scheduled, and the Musher’s Bowl in Bridgton and the Crystal Lake fishing derby in Gray, are back on after weather-related delays.

The Shaw’s Polar Ice Dip, which benefits the Maine Children’s Cancer Program, will take place at noon on Saturday, Feb. 18, off Raymond Beach, said derby co-director Steve McFarland.

“We’re going to get down there Thursday morning to cut the hole in the ice,” McFarland said. “It seems there’s plenty of ice for that.”

The Kittery Trading Post-sponsored Kid’s Derby is also still on for Saturday, from 8 a.m. to noon on Range Pond. Kids fish free, and the first 500 entrants get a free tip-up.

The Rotary Club’s Statewide Derby, in which anglers can fish any lake in Maine, is also on for the weekend of March 3-4. The prize purse from the Sebago Lake Derby will transfer to the Statewide Derby. More information can be found at www.icefishingderby.com.

The Mushers Bowl, which was postponed from late January due to lack of snow, is set to take place at Five Fields Farm in Bridgton this weekend, according to Jim Mains, director of the Greater Bridgton Lakes Region Chamber of Commerce.

Snow conditions are remarkably good, farm owner Tom Gyger said, but Friday’s forecasted storm, which could take the form of either snow or rain at the farm in South Bridgton, will play a part in whether the sled dog and skijoring races take place. Gyger said race spectators can log onto the Mushers Bowl website or Snow Country Ski Report on Saturday morning to see if the races are taking place.

“The forecast has the changeover (to snow) 30 miles inland. We’re 39 miles inland, and I’m at 850 feet of elevation here. It can rain in Naples or Bridgton but it’ll snow up here,” Gyger said. “But the only thing that will hurt us irreversibly is an all-rain event.”

Tickets for the races are $3 at the gate.

With a minimum of 12 inches of ice on Crystal Lake as of this week, Crystal Lake Ice Fishing Derby organizer Todd Bagetis is confident the Saturday, Feb. 25 event, originally postponed from Jan. 28, is a go.

“Everything’s on for Saturday, [Feb. 25],” Bagetis said. “We’re looking really good. We’ve got a packed house and I think we’re looking better than we were.”

The derby, which costs $10 for adults and $5 for children under 12, has a $10,000 prize purse and has scheduled comedian George Hamm, who’s going to do a “military ice fishing comedy show,” Bagetis said. The Patriot Brass Ensemble from New York City will perform, and kids will have plenty to do with Home Depot, Gray Recreation Department and L.L. Bean offering many varied events.
