SCARBOROUGH – The Scarborough School Department has received a significant offer of support from a Scarborough community member who has a passion for improving public schools and helping students in need, the department said in a press release.
Louis Fineberg has made a generous donation to the newly organized Scarborough Education Foundation. The donation will establish the Louis and Tina Fineberg Trust, created by Fineberg in memory of his late wife, Tina. Mr. and Mrs. Fineberg were married for 70 years and have been longtime Scarborough residents.
In a meeting with Scarborough school officials, Mr. Fineberg expressed his pleasure in being able to contribute to school programs. “I am glad that this money will provide wonderful opportunities for kids,” he said in the release.
According to the school department, Fineberg was intrigued by the school district’s innovative healthy food programs that recognize the important role that good nutrition plays in learning. He was pleased that the new Scarborough Education Foundation would be providing classroom and school-wide enrichment programs across the district.
Will Leadley, president of the Scarborough Education Foundation expressed his gratitude. “The Fineberg Trust provides our Foundation with a terrific start, one that will allow us to take an enormous jump forward. What a gift. I hope it will inspire and challenge others to follow Mr. Fineberg’s lead.”
The Scarborough Education Foundation was established in December 2011 with the mission of enhancing academic excellence by funding innovative and creative educational programs and initiatives that fall outside traditional school budget considerations.
The new foundation is engaged in a pledge campaign with hopes of making grants as early as this spring. The $100,000 Louis and Tina Fineberg Trust will provide for $10,000 allocations to the Scarborough Education Foundation, each year, for the next 10 years. The trust will also ensure that the nutritional program targeted to support students in need will continue to be funded, the release said.
“I hope that this donation will encourage others to step up and contribute,” said Fineberg.
