Rear Adm. Thomas K. Shannon has relieved Rear Adm. Samuel Perez as commander of Carrier Strike Group 1 (CSG-1). A change of command ceremony was held in November on board USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70) at San Diego. Shannon graduated from Lawrence High School in Fairfield in 1978 and from Maine Maritime Academy, Castine, in 1982. He previously served as deputy chief of staff for Operations, Training and Readiness, Commander, Pacific Fleet. Carrier Strike Group 1 is currently deployed in the Western Pacific.

Air Force Airman Matthew G. Silberman has graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas, where he earned distinction as an honor graduate. Silberman is the son of Christina and Adam Silberman of Portland and is a 2007 graduate of Deering High School.
