PORTLAND – A 22-year-old man who allegedly exchanged gunfire with U.S. marshals on Mellen Street on Friday night is expected to make his first court appearance Monday on a charge of attempted murder of a federal officer.
Arien L’Italien of Biddeford has also been charged with illegal possession of a firearm by a felon.
About 5:30 p.m. Friday, marshals attempted to arrest L’Italien, who was wanted on a felony arrest warrant charging him with aggravated assault in Biddeford.
The marshals said L’Italien ran and then allegedly shot at the officers. The marshals said they shot back and hit L’Italien in the leg.
No one else was hurt.
L’Italien was treated overnight at Maine Medical Center.
He was discharged from the hospital Saturday afternoon and taken to Cumberland County Jail.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office announced the charges Saturday afternoon and said L’Italien is expected to appear in federal court Monday.
Portland police, the FBI and the Maine Attorney General’s office are investigating the incident.
