DENNIS AND MARY YOULAND, left, help cut a ribbon Sunday, symbolically opening a new bridge on Reed Road in Woolwich. The bridge spans railroad tracks leading north after the rail line crosses the Kennebec River via the Carlton Bridge. The Youlands live in one of four houses on the far side of the bridge at the dead end of the road. The new span replaces a used railroad bridge installed in 1927. The former bridge had a six-ton weight limit, making fuel and concrete deliveries problematic. Dennis Youland said his father’s garage burned down in 1978, partially because the fire department couldn’t get water to the scene over the rickety span. The Woolwich Fire Department was on hand Sunday, and drove a fire truck across, demonstrating that the new bridge no longer poses a problem for rescue vehicles.
