BATH — A $5,000 grant from the L.L. Bean Land Trust Grant Program will allow the Kennebec Estuary Land Trust (KELT) to make its Overlook Trail accessible to people with disabilities.

The grant, which will fund adding a “firm and stable surface” on the half- mile- long trail off High Street, is just one component of the KELT Thorne Head Preserve Improvement Project, according to a release.

In July, the parking lot was redesigned and expanded to accommodate 10 cars, with one space compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act.

In the fall, volunteers and a crew from the Maine Conservation Corps rehabilitated the Narrows Trail along the Kennebec River to control erosion and protect water quality, the release states. The group also completed a large section of a new technical trail that runs along the face of the headland.

“Thorne Head Preserve is a wonderful asset to our community, and now even more of our citizens will be able to enjoy the beauty of this special place with the grant award,” Kevin Shute, program director of the Bath Area Family YMCA and member of Bath Trails, said in the release.
