SCARBOROUGH – Kevin Manning fully understands his role as a reserve on the Scarborough boys’ basketball team. He’s knows he has to make a positive impression when he gets his chance.

“I know I’m more like a role player who comes off the bench,” Manning said after scoring a game-high 16 points to help the Red Storm to a 52-24 victory over Biddeford in a Southern Maine Activities Association game Saturday afternoon at Scarborough’s Alumni Gymnasium.

“Sometimes it’s hard because if you make mistakes you’re going to go back to the bench, while the starters get a little more of a second chance. But it was great today to have an impact on the game.”

The Tigers (3-3) saw a three-game winning streak abruptly end. Scarborough (3-3), meanwhile, capped a week in which it also won the Maine Red Claws Holiday Tournament at the Portland Expo.

“We’ve had a great week,” said Red Storm Coach Joe Johnson. “We beat three quality teams in Cape (Elizabeth), Falmouth and Greely. “I was worried about a letdown obviously today after the high we were on. We started out slow, but in the second half we really got after it and put them away offensively.”

After falling behind in the opening moments of the game, Scarborough caught fire and used an 8-1 run in the last four minutes of the first quarter to grab a 10-6 advantage.

Manning was instrumental in keeping the Red Storm rolling in the second quarter. He started the quarter with a 3-pointer and scored nine points in an 11-2 run that left the Tigers trailing 21-8.

Scarborough dominated defensively, which translated into converted offensive opportunities through the remainder of the second quarter.

Meanwhile, the Tigers were being smothered and trailed 27-11 at the half. Biddeford was limited to single-digit scoring in each quarter and didn’t score back-to-back baskets until midway through the third quarter.

By then, Scarborough owned a 36-18 lead. The Red Storm carried a 46-19 advantage into the final quarter.

“We couldn’t drop a shot and Scarborough did a great job defensively on (Bobby) Cote,” said Biddeford Coach Mike Fecteau. “I give total credit to the Scarborough kids. They played hard, and defensively they held us to one shot. I think we only had two or three offensive rebounds all game.”

Cote, who was averaging 23.6 points per game and had accounted for 41 percent of his team’s offense heading into the game, finished with just 14 points.

“Cote’s a very smart basketball player and he uses his body well,” said Johnson. “We were guarding him on the perimeter and we held him in check. It was just a great job defensively on him, a team effort.”
