GRAY – The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Department is on the lookout for the person responsible for vandalizing one of Gray’s welcome signs.

The sign on Route 115 at the North Yarmouth border was spray-painted sometime last Friday night or early Saturday morning, according to Gray’s contract deputy Matt Thompson.

Thompson said he was unable to collect fingerprints at the scene, and though there were footprints in the dirt beneath the sign, none proved substantial enough to collect a usable impression.

“We have nothing at this point,” Thompson said Wednesday afternoon.

The sign, which the town installed within the past few months, features, “At the Heart of it All,” alluding to Gray’s notoriety as the Crossroads of Maine since several major roadways crisscross through town. Fortunately, Thompson said, there is a Plexiglass covering so the spray-paint can be removed easily.

Thompson said the vandalism isn’t a tag since it “doesn’t have a sense of organization to it. It’s more like the vandal was just trying to deface it, rather than write something,” he said.

None of the other welcome signs in the town have been similarly vandalized, Thompson said.

Anyone with information about the vandalism can call Thompson at 774-1444, ext. 1136.
