BRUNSWICK — Brunswick High School overcame an early 17-9 first-quarter deficit, got some key free throws down the stretch and beat Edward Little 54-48 in Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference boys basketball action on Friday.
“ It was huge and we had two starters missing,” said Brunswick coach Todd Hanson. “We got great contributions off the bench from Jibreel Garrett and Alex Viola.”
Brad Smith (foot) and Garrett Erb (ankle) sat out the contest.
“ In the second quarter I think we just settled down and did a better job with EL’s Quin Leary (17 points). And, we tried to play more of an uptempo game the rest of the way.”
Brunswick trailed 17-9 after one quarter, but stitched together a 16-3 second-period spurt to go up 25- 20 at the half. Brunswick led 37-29 after three quarters, but the Eddies got back into it and led 45-44 before Brunswick reeled off six straight points.
Mitchell Black canned a key jumper with a minute left to help preserve the win.
Konnor Scarponi led Brunswick with 17 points, while Black had 13 and Viola seven.
Nate Alexander had 11 points in the loss, including a 3-pointer late.
The 2-1 Dragons are scheduled to visit Oxford Hills on Tuesday.
MORSE 35 MARANACOOK 58
At Readfield on Friday, the visiting Shipbuilders dropped their first game with a KVAC Class B setback.
Morse, 1-1 and slated to host Gardiner on Tuesday (7 p.m.), jumped out to a 13-9 lead after a quarter, but Maranacook (1- 2) outscored the Shipbuilders 20-5 in the second frame for a 29- 18 lead at the half. The hosts expanded their lead to 46-26 after 24 minutes.
Kyle Boucher led all scorers with 12 points for Maranacook, with teammate Seth Miller chipping in 10.
Matt Munster paced Morse with 11 points, with Kevin McKellar pulling down a team- high eight rebounds. The Shipbuilders finished five of 10 from the foul line, while Maranacook was 13 of 22.
RICHMOND 38 GREENVILLE 59
Visiting Richmond managed just four third-quarter points as the host Lakers pulled away in East-West Conference action in Greenville on Friday.
“We played about a quarterand a-half of strong basketball, so we need to work on getting that up to half a game to have more success,” said Richmond coach Phil Houdlette, whose Bobcats are 0-3 and slated to host Rangeley on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
Ben Carver paced Richmond with 14 points, while Sean Bernier chipped in 12. Randy Moody had six rebounds and Nate Tribbett six steals. The Bobcats were six of 17 from the foul line.
Chris Munro led 2- 1 Greenville with 14 points. Matt DiAngelo chipped in 12 and Howie Stone 10, while the Lakers were 11 of 21 from the free-throw line.
ST. DOM’S 58 LISBON 33
The visiting Saints ( 2- 2) jumped out to a 23-2 lead after a quarter and cruised to a Mountain Valley Conference victory at Lisbon Falls on Friday.
“They played a simple manto man, but we turned the ball over and didn’t play strong defense,” said Lisbon (0-3) coach Eric Hall, whose team visits Wiscasset on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
St. Dom’s led 39-9 at the half and 55-20 after three quarters.
Mason Haley paced the Greyhounds with eight points, five rebounds, four steals and three assists. Mason Smith chipped in seven points, and Lisbon was six of eight from the foul line.
Joe Bryant scored nine of his game-high 20 points in the first quarter for the Saints, with teammate Tom Applegate chipping in 16. St. Dom’s was 11 of 21 from the freethrow line.
FREEPORT 63 LAKE REGION 73
The host Lakers scored 22 second-quarter points for a six-point halftime lead and held on from there in dropping the Falcons to 1- 2 in Western Maine Conference play at Bridgton on Saturday.
Freeport darted out to a 20- 14 lead after a quarter, but trailed 36-30 at the half and 51-45 after 24 minutes.
Mitch Loeman had 20 points for Freeport, while Josh Weirich chipped in 16 points and seven rebounds. The Falcons were 13 of 21 from the foul line.
“The kids certainly played hard, and if we can limit our mistakes, we can compete with anyone,” said Freeport coach Matt Cook, whose team hosts Wells on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
Alex Hartford paced Lake Region (1-3) with 23 points. Mike Triglione added 16 points and the Lakers finished 17 of 28 from the charity stripe.
