Volunteer recognition
Each year, Gray recognizes volunteers throughout the community for their exemplary citizenship and volunteerism. It is time for the nomination of these recipients. As community members, it is asked that you provide nominations for the following categories:
Volunteer of the Year, Committee of the Year, Organization of the Year, Lifetime Achievement Award and Evelyn Morrill Durgin Award.
Deadline to nominate Board & Committee volunteers for 2011 is Dec. 1. For more information and recommendations of what makes people/groups eligible, go the Town Hall in Gray at 24 Main St. or to http://graymaine.org/ and check out the form that you need to fill out.
Time to think ?of others
The Caring Community of Gray-New Gloucester is now distributing applications for Christmas Food Baskets and Gifts/Clothing (for children). Individuals, including senior citizens, and families of Gray and New Gloucester who find themselves in need of holiday assistance are asked to fill out an application and return the completed form by Thursday, Dec. 1.
Applications for Christmas assistance are available for pick-up and drop-off at the Gray Public Library, the Gray Town Hall, the New Gloucester Town Hall and at the Russell, Dunn and Memorial schools.
The CC of GNG is a volunteer group organized to provide holiday assistance to individuals and families within the towns of Gray and New Gloucester. They are only able to accomplish this through the generous donations of individuals, families, businesses and groups within our great community.

Here comes ?Santa Claus
The annual Gray Tree Lighting Ceremony will be held at the Henry Pennell Municipal Complex, on 24 Main St. in Gray on Sunday, Nov. 27, beginning at 2:30 p.m. This great event will feature music, holiday caroling, stories, and refreshments to get you into the Holiday Spirit.
Santa will arrive by fire truck to light the tree at 4:15 p.m. Please bring a non-perishable food item for the community food pantry. We’ll also be accepting donations of new mittens for the local schools and shelters. The event is hosted by the Gray Historical Society, Gray Fire-Rescue and Gray Parks and Recreation.
For the good of Gray
Gray Community Endowment is building a permanent fund for Gray. The funds are invested and professionally managed by the Maine Community Foundation (www.mainecf.org). Each year, the GCE invests some of the interest they earn in projects that benefit Gray, and put the rest back in the endowment so it can grow to support more local projects in the future. The GCE board decides how to distribute the funds, which can support the arts, education, open space and recreation, and economic and community development.
It is time to get your application in to GCE. They are looking for proposals that will better life in Gray. The application date is Dec.15. Check out their website for more details and an application, www.gcemaine.org.
Holidays ?at the Library
The Annual Gingerbread House event will be held on Saturday, Dec. 3, from 10:30 a.m.-2 p.m. This activity is free and open to all. Remember to reserve your library holiday tree for decorating in the theme of your favorite book. Trees will be available after Thanksgiving. The library supplies the trees, you supply the creativity.
The Gray Public Library will close at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 23, and will remain closed until Tuesday, Nov. 29, for the Thanksgiving holiday. It will be open for regularly scheduled hours on Tuesday, Nov. 29.

Get out this winter
The Gray Public Library would like to be able to offer free tax income tax preparation to local residents. Are you looking for a meaningful volunteer activity that only involves a time commitment during the winter months? Do you like meeting and helping folks in Gray and the surrounding area? Do you use a computer? If so, this might be the perfect volunteer activity for you. You do not have to be over 50 or retired. Volunteers of all ages are welcome! You do not need to be a “tax expert” as training in both tax law and tax software is provided in January. Merry times ?at the Legion
The American Legion Auxiliary Post No. 86 Gray at 15 Lewiston Road,will hold its Annual Holiday Fair on Sunday, Dec. 4, from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. They will have folks selling jewelry, handcrafted gifts, totes, wreaths, photography, handknits, fudge, Avon, stocking stuffers and baked goods. On Saturday, Dec. 3, from 2-8 p.m. they will also host a Vendor’s Fair which will include products you can buy from Pampered Chef, Micchi Bags, Mary Kay, etc.

Think Sno
The next Gray SnoWolves Snowmobile Club meeting is Tuesday, Dec. 13, 7 p.m. at the State Police Barracks on Route 26 in Gray. The club has worked hard to clear trails and replace bridges but they encourage every club member to take a walk on the trails before the snow flies to identify problem areas. Some major work projects are being planned and volunteers are always needed, please email or call Brad at snowolves@gmail.com if you can help or call 428-3308.
