Causeway update
As of late, the weather has been cooperating for the construction crew as they forge ahead on the Causeway renovation. The sidewalks are nearly completed, and lots of paving and retaining wall work is going on. I think the progress is going great, and I haven’t noticed too many traffic delays. Keep up the good work!
Progress
The town of Naples is one step closer to building the road and boat ramp it had envisioned when it purchased the Kent Landing property. About a dozen trees were cleared and the former home of Helen Dingley was burned to make way for the project. It is an exciting time for Naples.
Library sale
For the 15th year in a row, the Naples Public Library is clearing the huge conference table in its Gathering Room to make way for more than 100 wonderful original works of art for its much anticipated “Mini-Art Sale”. This year’s sale will take place on the Saturday after the Thanksgiving holiday, Nov. 26, from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. Since 1996, local artists have been painting and donating small works of art, most measuring five by seven inches, to be sold by the library with all proceeds going to support library services, which are free to all.
Most works are watercolors, with a few pastel and acrylic pieces. All are done by local artists, many of whom paint with the library’s Monday Morning Art Group. Andrea Dacko, the organizer of the Monday Morning Group donates several works each year. “We really enjoy having a space available for us to meet in and paint as a group”, she said. “The library provides the space to us for free, so we see it as a way to pay it forward, to support the library so that it can continue to do this not only for our group, but for others as well.”
The paintings are artfully arranged around the Gathering Room, and there is a large selection of matted prints in larger sizes by Raymond artist Dick Anzelc. Dick has presented several paintings to the former presidents George H.W. Bush and George W. Bush at Walker’s Point in Kennebunkport.
Art lovers will also find works by Lynda Wilson, Deb Hall, Flo Cooper, Maureen Stout, Waldo Preble, Carol Hines and many others at the sale. Most pieces are priced at $10 each, with some larger ones priced slightly higher. There is something there for everyone of all ages and tastes. These beautiful little pieces of art make lovely holiday or hostess gifts.
As is the tradition, the library’s famous Cookie Walk fundraiser will take place at the same time as the art sale. For a $5 donation, those with a sweet tooth can fill a bag with goodies baked by the library’s legion of volunteer bakers. There will be a feast for the taste buds as well as for the eyes at this much-loved library fundraising event. Come early for the best selection of art as well as cookies. Christmas in Naples
Naples Main Street has planned their Annual Tree Lighting event for Saturday, Dec. 10 right on the Village Green. A wreath auction is also planned for that evening. Businesses buy the wreath from the group and add goodies to it to increase its value and appeal. The committee is still seeking businesses who would like to get creative with a wreath. Seeking local ?military families
CrossWalk, the local organization which does so much good year-round, wants to show the love to our military this season, but they need your help. Do you know a military family whose loved ones are either deployed now or have been in the last few years? Gilson dinner
Lunch is served on Sunday, Nov. 20! Come out and show your support for local teen, Kevin Gilson, at a spaghetti supper to benefit Kevin, who was paralyzed in a tragic car accident in Naples. The event is an all-day affair, beginning at noon and running until 5 p.m. Tickets for the luncheon are $10 and will include spaghetti, meatballs, salad, bread and dessert. Belated congrats!
Lucky am I to have the wonderful neighbors I do, including Joanna Moore, who recently won the “6 Who Cares” award for her relentless community efforts including CrossWalkCommunity Outreach and Kyrie’s Kitchen. Joanna is always working on something to help the people of the Lakes Region. Her next project is the Thanksgiving Day meal she is helping to organize at the Naples Town Gym. Community meal
The folks at Christ Chapel in Raymond know you may not want to cook and clean up again after the Thanksgiving Holiday. Why not join them and your neighbors for their complimentary meal at their Church off of Route 85? They will be serving a buffet meal of Chop Suey, Lobster Chowder, Salad, Rolls and dessert on Saturday, Nov. 26, from 4:30-6 p.m. A family friendly movie will follow the meal.
