Oct. 21 @ Gorham 7 p.m.
Coach: Lance Johnson
Last year’s record: 8-2, lost to Cheverus in the quarterfinals
Key returning players: After losing a staggering 22 seniors to graduation, the new-look Red Storm will need to get a lot out of returning starters such as Dillon Russo, Scott Thibeault, Kolbey Adams, Kellen Smith, Conor McCann, Jesse Bell, Logan Mars and David Conceison.
Key games this season: Not much will come easy for Scarborough this year. But the Red Storm got things off to a rousing start with a decisive 21-6 win in the home opener over Windham. Thibeault was absolutely dominant in the game, rushing for an incredible 274 yards and two touchdowns (and he had a 60-plus-yard TD run called back on a penalty to boot). But the Storm can’t rest on their laurels, this week they travel Sanford to face a Redskin club that has many coaches buzzing this year.
Season outlook: A lot of pressure is going to be placed on the shoulders of Russo, although he does have experience at the helm after last season and he got a big boost from the explosive running game in the opener. Scarborough won’t be able to sneak up on teams and easily repeat a 7-1 run through the regular season. It will be up to Johnson to assure that the Storm don’t regress, and if the first game is any indication, the team has bought into Johnson’s system and with Thibeault leading the way, the Storm should be a force to reckoned with again this season.

Season outlook: Scarborough is always tough on the soccer pitch and this year looks to be no exception. The Storm should be a solid contender come playoff time.

Coach: Mike Farley
Last year’s record: 18-0, won the Class A state championship
Top returning players: “My top senior returning players are Jessica Broadhurst (back), Haley Carignan (forward), Molly Carter (midfield) Emily Howes (back), Kaitlin Reynolds (midfield), Emily Tolman (back) and Meghan Tyson (midfield),” Farley said. “Top returning juniors are Taylor Leborgne (midfield), Sarah Martens (forward), Jessica Meader (forward), Maria Philbrick (back) and Ashley Ronzo (midfield).”
Key games this season: “Our key games will be Gorham at home Sept. 10, Cheverus Sept. 17 at home and Thornton Sept. 24 at home,” Farley said. “Other important ones are Sept. 28 at Deering and Oct. 1 at Windham.”
Season outlook: “I’m very optimistic about this year’s team,” Farley said. “We obviously lost a lot of impact players, but I have been very impressed with the way this year’s team has approached the summer and preseason. They are playing like they have something to prove, and I think that is always a great way to approach a season. We have some players back that were key contributors on last year’s team and some players that have been waiting in the wings for the opportunity to put their stamp on the team. That mix of experience and desire to prove something will hopefully make us one of the top teams in the SMAA again.”
“Our hope is to start the season with a consistent level of play and really try to build on what we accomplished last year defensively,” he added. “We know that teams will be looking to knock us off and I think this team will embrace the pressure and really try to defend our standing in the league.”

Last year’s record: 13-1-0, lost in Class A semifinals
Key returning players: Stephanie Felt, Kelsey Howard, Shauni Cowan and Lindsay Dobecki.
Key games this season: Cheverus, Thornton Academy, Sanford
Season outlook: The Red Storm entered last year’s playoffs as the defending state champion and the top overall seed in Class A West, only to drop a tough 2-1 decision to Cheverus at home, ending the Storm’s season much earlier than the team wanted. With a core of talented, experienced players returning to the fold this fall, Scarborough is poised to be a force in Class A once again and will be looking to get back to the state championship game once again.

Coach: Jon Roberts, second year
Last year’s result: Made playoffs, but lost to Falmouth in the first round.
Key returning players: “We are lucky to have six returning seniors this year,” Roberts said. “Meghan McAlary, Meghan Bickmore, and Amber Bowen are defensive specialists. Rachel Webber and Brittany Bona are outside hitters, and Emily Robbins is our setter. They are joined by juniors Cameron Bowker, Lily Lemire, and Meghan Lynch, and sophomores Mary Cleary, Abby Mills and Lauren Pipen. Bowen, Robbins, and Bona are captains.”
Season outlook: “Bona and Robbins are two of the best players in the state,” Roberts said. “Bona led the league in kills last season and Robbins led the league in assists. They both have great serves and can score points in lots of different ways. They have both improved since last year and we expect a lot of good things from them again.”
“Younger players already making an impact are Mary Cleary and Lauren Pipen,” he added. “Cleary puts up one of the biggest blocks in the state and her offense has come a long way. Pipen, who is new to Scarborough, is already a team favorite. She is a great passer and setter and has already made an impact with the team in preseason play.”
