Rugg propels MPS Phoenixto 1-1 tie with Pioneers
Charlie Rugg scored from Parker Duncan in the 81st minute to pull the MPS Portland Phoenix even with the Western Mass Pioneers in a 1-1 draw Sunday night in a USL Premier Development League match at Deering High’s Memorial Field.
Chris Roswess scored from James Mooney in the 14th minute for the Pioneers (6-4-4). Matt Williams made five saves for the Phoenix (7-2-5). Colin O’Donnell had 11 for Western Mass.
The Phoenix need to win one of their last two games to clinch the Northeast Division title.
MLS: Carlos Ruiz and Carlos Valdes each scored within a 13-minute span in the first half to lead the Philadelphia Union (8-4-7) to a 3-0 win over the New England Revolution (3-9-7) at Foxborough, Mass.
BASEBALL
NECBL: Chantz Mack hit a two-run single to cap off a four-run fifth inning for the North Adams SteepleCats (10-19) as they rallied for a 7-4 win over the Old Orchard Beach Raging Tide at North Adams, Mass.
Billy Bereszniewicz went 3 for 5 with a double and one RBI for the Raging Tide, who led 4-3 going into the bottom of the fifth inning.
Robbie Trask added two hits and two RBI for Old Orchard Beach.
AMERICAN LEGION: Spencer Egan scored on a catcher’s balk in the bottom of the seventh to give OA-Yarmouth a 7-6 win over Libby-Mitchell in the second game of a doubleheader after dropping the first game 9-7 at Yarmouth.
Egan walked and advanced to third on a double by Ryan Cavallaro. He scored when Libby-Mitchell’s catcher stepped out early on an intentional ball. Cavallaro, Dustin McCrossin and Bryce Snyder each had three hits for OA-Yarmouth (5-13) in the second game.
In the first game, Ryan Mancini went 4 for 4 with two doubles and four RBI to lead Libby-Mitchell (9-9). Libby-Mitchell held on after taking an 8-7 lead in the fourth on an RBI triple by Brendan Sullivan and RBI doubles by Mancini and Conor McCann.
JUNIOR LEGION: Brad Carney pitched a five-hitter to lead First Title to a 4-1 win in the opener of a doubleheader, but Kennebunk took the second game 2-1 at Kennebunk.
In the second game, Kennebunk got a sacrifice fly from Nicco Haritos and an RBI single from Kip Richard to take a 2-1 lead in the third. Brady Murray struck out five in a complete-game loss for First Title.
TWILIGHT LEAGUE: Nick Cesario scored the winning run on a bases-loaded walk in the top of the ninth to lift Aero Heating & Ventilating (6-9) to a 3-2 win over Lenders Network at Deering Oaks.
• Scott Madden had four hits and scored three runs, and Nick Grady had two hits, including a home run, and drove in three runs to lead Ron Beaulieu & Co. to a 14-0 win over Aero Heating & Ventilating (6-10) at Deering Oaks.
FOOTBALL
EASTERN FOOTBALL LEAGUE: Matt Rollins threw for three touchdowns and rushed for another to lead the Maine Sabers to a 42-6 win over the Charlestown Townies at Portland on Saturday.
The Sabers also got a rushing TD from James Horton and a TD pass from Jeremy Shorey.
