BAR HARBOR — A hotel guest in Bar Harbor thought his car was the target of a paintball vandal, but police say it was actually the target of birds that fouled the car with their droppings.

Police were called to the Bar Harbor Regency — the same hotel where President Barack Obama stayed last summer — on July 6 by an employee who said a guest had reported the car was an apparent target of vandalism, with large splotches that appeared to come from paintballs fired from a paintball gun.

Bar Harbor police dispatcher Sharon Worcester said when an officer responded, he discovered the splotches were actually a “large amount of bird poo.”

During the summer, Maine’s large gull population has been known to soil buildings and vehicles with their smelly droppings.
