Play reading at library

Andrew Harris of Portland Stage Company is leading an interactive reader’s theater workshop from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Thursday at the Portland Public Library.

Harris will perform a stage reading of, “Dragon for Sale” by Marianne Macdonald followed by a workshop with audience participation. The workshop will focus on characters from the play, places in the play, or situations that the play illuminates.

This event is part of a series that is being offered through the children’s summer reading program. It is free and open to children ages 4 to 10. For more information, go to www.portlandlibrary.com.

Planetarium program

Northern Stars Planetarium is offering four showings of “The Wonderful Sky” today at the Scarborough Public Library, 48 Gorham Road.

The planetarium is an inflatable star theater that uses a star projector, slides, video, special effects and a sound system during the presentation. Show times are 5:30, 6, 6:30 and 7 p.m.

The program is free. Space is limited for each show. Tickets can be picked up in advance at the youth room at the library.

Declaration to be read

The Declaration of Independence will be read at 10 a.m. Saturday during the History Barn’s monthly open house at the barn on Route 231. The event is sponsored by the historical society. For more information, call 926-4597.

 

Canvas floorcloth workshop

A floorcloth workshop will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Sabbathday Lake Shaker Village on Route 26.

Betsy Grecoe will teach people how to make a canvas floorcloth using traditional designs or designs of their own making. Grecoe sells her floorcloths at the Shaker Store. The cost is $55, which includes all materials. Preregistration is required. For more information, call 926-4597.

Herb cooking workshop

A hands-on herb cooking workshop will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Sabbathday Lake Shaker Village.

Participants will learn how to harvest and dry herbs, make herb blend recipes and prepared foods.

Grief support meeting

VNA Home Health & Hospice is holding its monthly grief support meeting from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at North Windham Union Church, 723 Roosevelt Trail.

The topic of the meeting will be, “Grief and Family Gatherings.” It’s an open group for anyone dealing with the death of a loved one. For more information, call 400-8714.
