SANFORD — Firefighters from several surrounding towns are still battling a structure fire in a rural area of Sanford that broke out earlier tonight.

Capt. Harold Smith said the fire in a single-family home at 122 Sand Pond Road was reported at 9 p.m.

The home’s owners were not home when the fire started, Smith said. The cause of the fire is not known.
