GORHAM – The body of a Gorham man who went missing a month ago was found Tuesday afternoon, according to a family member.

David Herring said he found the body of his brother, Bernard Herring, hanging in a pine tree 10 feet behind the door of Bernard Herring’s Main Street apartment.

“I found him,” David Herring said late Tuesday afternoon while outside the apartment.

Several Gorham police officers, including Chief Ron Shepard, were at the scene late Tuesday afternoon. Lt. Chris Sanborn of the Gorham Police Department confirmed a body had been discovered. “We haven’t identified the body,” said Sanborn, who decline further comment.

Bernard Herring, 57, who worked as a private contractor, was last seen April 11 at around 9 p.m., when he walked away from home following an argument with his girlfriend. An extensive search two days later of the fields and woods surrounding his home was unsuccessful.

The search, launched April 13, included a large contingent of police, firefighters, game wardens and cadaver dogs, along with an airplane. Detective Sgt. Dana Thompson of Gorham police said areas of the Little River and Presumpscot River had also been searched in the effort to locate Herring.

David Herring had said earlier Tuesday afternoon that he thought his brother had hung himself. “He’s been depressed for a long time,” David Herring said.
