AUGUSTA — A proposal to ban text messaging while driving is moving through the Maine Legislature.

The Senate last week passed a measure to outlaw texting and it now awaits a House vote.

Lawmakers attempted to deal with all forms of distracted driving last year by adding penalties for drivers who cause accidents while using a cellphone, texting, eating or engage in some other activity.

Some lawmakers say it didn’t go far enough.

Sen. Bill Diamond, a Windham Democrat, is sponsoring the newer bill in Maine.

Other states, including neighboring New Hampshire and Vermont, have enacted texting-while-driving bans.
