Ford, Mancuso dominate at U.S. championships
Tommy Ford won a second straight race at the U.S. championships in Winter Park, Colo., mastering the mushy snow to capture the super-G title Saturday.
Ford and Julia Mancuso are proving quite adept at skiing in warm springtime conditions. Mancuso won the women’s super-G, her second national title in as many days and 13th of her career.
Leading off the men’s competition, Ford flew down the twisty course in 1 minute, 10.10 seconds, a time that held up as Tommy Biesemeyer finished .10 seconds behind.
HOCKEY
BANTAM NATIONALS: Ben Freeman of Falmouth and Sterling Weatherbie of Cape Elizabeth each scored twice to lead Casco Bay to an 8-0 semifinal win over Atlanta at the USA Youth Hockey Tier II boys’ bantam national finals in Williamsville, N.Y.
Casco Bay is scheduled to play the Nashville Junior Predators at 9 a.m. today for the national title.
CRICKET
WORLD CUP FINAL: India won cricket’s World Cup for the first time in 28 years with a victory at Mumbai, India, over Sri Lanka.
Skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni provided the runs in the six-wicket victory, helping the great Sachin Tendulkar to his first title in six attempts.
TENNIS
SONY ERICSSON OPEN: Victoria Azarenka won the tournament for the second time, beating Maria Sharapova, 6-1, 6-4 in Key Biscayne, Fla.
GOLF
PGA: Phil Mickelson shot his lowest round in two years, tying the course record with a 9-under 63 to share the lead with Scott Verplank after three rounds at the Houston Open in Humble, Texas.
CHAMPIONS TOUR: Tom Lehman set the course record by shooting an 8-under 64, taking a one stroke lead over Jeff Sluman after the second round of the Mississippi Gulf Resort Classic in Saucier, Miss.
LPGA: Yani Tseng roared into the lead at the Kraft Nabisco Championship with a third-round 66 in Rancho Mirage, moving two shots ahead of Stacy Lewis.
SOCCER
MLS: Jack Jewsbury scored in the 38th minute and the expansion Portland Timbers earned their first point in MLS with a 1-1 tie against the New England Revolution in Foxorough, Mass.
New England (1-0-2) took the lead in the 22nd minute when midfielder Stephen McCarthy scored his first MLS goal.
PREMIER LEAGUE: Wayne Rooney’s hat trick kept Manchester United on track to win the league championship with a 4-2 comeback victory over West Ham, while the title hopes of Arsenal and Chelsea were hurt by draws.
Second-place Arsenal drew 0-0 with visiting Blackburn and Chelsea, in third, needed a 33rd-minute header by Didier Drogba to escape with a 1-1 draw against a Stoke team in the middle of the standings.
u.s. women: England beat the U.S. women’s team for the first time since 1988, handing the top-ranked Americans a 2-1 exhibition defeat in east London.
Jess Clarke put the home side ahead in the eighth minute at Leyton Orient’s Matchroom Stadium and England led 2-0 when Rachel Yankey scored 18 minutes later.
Megan Rapinoe scored for the U.S. six minutes before halftime.
PREP SCHOOLS
GIRLS’ LACROSSE: Jacqui Zannos finished with three goals and one assist to pace Berwick Academy in a 12-9 loss against Portsmouth Abbey in a season opener at Portsmouth, R.I.
Anna Wright and Sophie Merrow added two goals apiece for the Bulldogs and freshman goalie Kaitlyn Wurzer made 18 saves.
SOFTBALL: Karyssa Edwards had a two-run home run and went the distance on the mound to lead Portsmouth Abbey to a 14-8 opening victory over Berwick Academy at Portsmouth, R.I.
Jenna Maddock went 3 for 5 with a two-run shot for Berwick.
