BANGOR — A Maine prosecutor says a teenager “executed” a rival last year during a fight on a Bangor street.
Assistant Attorney General Andrew Benson made the comments Monday on the opening day of the trial of 19-year-old Zachary Carr.
Benson says the victim, John “Bobby” Surles, was “lying on the ground, with nothing in his hands, struggling to raise himself up off the ground when he was executed” by Carr. Surles was shot in the chest and died later in a hospital.
Carr is on trial on charges of intentional or knowing murder and adequate provocation manslaughter. He has pleaded not guilty.
The Bangor Daily News quotes Carr’s attorney as saying Carr acted reasonably in response to heated confrontations between two groups of young men that escalated to the breaking point.
