A pick-up truck owned by Mike Manning of MGM Builders in Windham sank into Jordan Bay early Thursday morning.

Manning, who was on his way home to Casco at about 3 a.m. after plowing for his Windham clients, attempted to aid two ice fishermen who got stuck as they drove their car in deep snow out to their fishing shack.

After plowing a way to the shack, Manning was on his way back to the boat launch at Raymond Beach when he felt one of the back wheels give way, and then the other. He leaped out of the cab and watched as the truck partially settled into six feet of water. Manning was unhurt, and rescue crews from Advanced Towing in Windham and Stewart’s Towing in South Portland spent much of Thursday running cable out to the submerged vehicle.

According to Manning the ice was only 5 inches thick where he went in, though it was closer to 18 inches elsewhere. A passerby indicated the area had had a pressure ridge form earlier in the week.

The truck weighed about 16,000 pounds and was weighted down with about a yard and a half of sand/salt mixture. A crew from SeaTow used five “lift bags” to lift the truck off the bottom and back onto the ice as a heavy duty Stewart’s Towing truck based on the boat ramp winched the truck to shore.

Manning said the truck was likely totaled from being submerged and will be damaged further in the extraction.

A GMC 5500 pickup truck sank into Jordan Bay 1500 feet off Raymond Beach at 3:30 a.m. Thursday.
