A 16-year-old boy died after skiing into an object off the side of a difficult trail at Sugarloaf, a spokesman for the Carrabassett Valley resort said.

Ethan Austin said the teen was the son of a Sugarloaf employee and a student at Carrabassett Valley Academy. He said the resort does not release the names of those injured on the mountain, and the Carrabassett Valley police declined to release the boy’s name because the department isn’t sure the mother has been notified.

Austin said the accident occurred on a black diamond trail, indicating it is considered a difficult run.

Austin said officials aren’t sure what object the boy hit off the side of the trail.
