Maine Native American Market
The Maine Native American Summer Market and Demonstration will be held rain or shine at Sabbathday Lake Shaker Museum, Route 26, New Gloucester, from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 28. This event will include hand-woven ash splint and sweetgrass baskets, traditional etched birch bark vessels, stone sculptures, woodcarvings, cedar flutes, jewelry, traditional story-telling and demonstrations.
The 20 featured Native Americans are among the finest and renowned artists representing the Penobscot, Passamaquoddy, Micmac and Maliseet tribes. Shaker Village ?Aug. 21 activities
R & R Spinners will give a free demonstration of their spinning skills and creations beginning at 10 a.m.
Learn the 7-step method of chair caning at a workshop to be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Participants are asked to bring a sound hand woven chair, and there is a $35 fee for the workshop.
Take a guided nature hike into the wilds of Shaker Village to find the local bald eagle, other fauna and summer flora, Loon’s Point and Aurelia’s Cascade. Two hikes are being offered during the time slots of 10 a.m.-12:30 p.m. or 1:30-4 p.m. Fees are $5 for an adult; $2 for a child; under 6 free.

Family carnival
A family carnival will be held on the grounds of the New Gloucester Bible Church, Route 100, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 14. All ages are invited to enjoy fun, food and prizes. For more information, call 926-3140.
Library Players production
Library Players will again be performing at the New Gloucester Public Library’s end of the summer reading program celebration. This year the play is titled “The Four Elements: Earth, Air, Fire…and Water,” a Tim Terranova original. Warning to audience members in the front row: You may get wet!
The play and summer reading program both share the same themes of earth, air, fire and water. Library director Suzan Hawkins is pleased to report that over 200 readers and listeners joined the reading program this year. Four reading groups are taking part in the program: the library’s morning and evening adult group, Tweens and Teens book group, and a local group known as the No Name Book Club.
The public is invited to attend the performance of the Library Players at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 24. The performance will kick off the evening’s program, followed by a celebration of the accomplishments of participating readers. Light refreshments will be served. Blueberry jam
Did you know that Maine produces enough blueberries for each of us to eat 65 pounds a week? Get your native blueberries at the New Gloucester Community Market and join the master preservers for a blueberry jam session on Sunday, Aug. 15. The market is open 11 a.m.-3 p.m. every Sunday through Oct. 31 in the Amvets Hall parking lot, Route 100.
Full tummy
On Saturday, Aug. 21, from 5:30-6:30 p.m., Sabbathday Lake Grange will hold a smorgasbord supper. The menu includes beans, hotdogs, casseroles and salads, capped off with brownies and ice cream for dessert. The cost is $7.50 for adults and $3 for children under 10. The hall, which is handicapped-accessible, is located at 370 Sabbathday Road in New Gloucester, just off Route 26.
Bull’s-eye
Royal River Rod & Gun Club will be sponsoring an Open Range Day on Saturday, Aug. 28, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Bring your favorite firearms and try the 35-yard and 100-yard ranges. Shooters of all abilities, including beginners, are welcome to participate. It’s time to start practicing since hunting season is just around the corner! Admission is free, and the event is open to the public.
