Open house

More than 100 people visited the Windham Historical Society’s Open House on June 26 and spent hours examining the collection of old maps, some going back 200 years. It was wonderful to see so many new people and old friends, as well. When visiting for the first time, either to the Old Grocery across from Corsetti’s or to the former town hall where the society headquarters are now located, everyone is amazed at the collection of items from Windham’s past. The nearly two dozen maps now on display offer visitors the opportunity of finding the location of their house and seeing what the area used to look like before the addition of dozens of roads and the actual moving of major thoroughfares. The display will be featured for a few more weeks. Stop in any Thursday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. or call 892-1433 and leave word if you’d like an appointment. There is no charge.

Class reunion deadline July 10

Windham High School Class of 1980 is holding its 30th class reunion on Saturday, July 24, at the Windham Veterans Center. Cost is $50 per person. The classes of 1979 and 1981 are invited to join in the fun. Activities start at 4 p.m. for socializing, chicken and rib barbecue and dancing ‘til midnight! Estate sale

Windham Historical Society will hold an estate sale at 732 River Road, on Saturday, July 10, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. This will include partial contents of a North Gorham home. Proceeds benefit the society. Call Linda Griffin at 650-7484 for more information.

Herb and plant sale

The Community Garden Committee is holding an herb and perennial plant sale on Saturday, July 24, from 9 a.m. to noon in front of the Food Pantry on Route 202. The sale will feature wonderful additions for your flower garden including lilies, hosta and more.

History of public water supply

“The History of Greater Portland’s Public Water Supply” is the title of a free program planned for Wednesday, July 14, at 6 p.m. at Windham Public Library. Presented by Portland Water District’s historian, the program describes the birth of the area’s public water supply and the devastating event that changed everything. Attendees will view some of the district’s collection of artifacts including wooden pipes. Please RSVP to 892-1908.

Music on the Hill

The Windham Hill United Church of Christ presents its 13th year of concerts for the public beginning July 10 with our own Rick Charette. The concert starts at 5 p.m. On July 17, an a cappella group, Sidecar Heroes, plays at 7 p.m.; Denny Breau Trio brings their folk music to the hill on July 24 at 7 p.m. The final concert is The Royal River Philharmonic Jazz Band on July 31 at 7 p.m. Tickets are available at the door, $12 for adults, $8 for senior citizens and age 12 and under; $40 for the series. For Rick Charette’s concert, tickets for 12 and under are $3. For reservations, call 893-1688. The concerts all take place at the church on the hill, 140 Windham Center Road.

Tea for you

Tea for you @ your library will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, July 20, at Windham Public Library. Enjoy a wonderful afternoon tea with friends at the library in the public meeting room. New Veteran’s Advocate

Wednesday, July 14, from 9 a.m. noon, Phyllis D’Orsay, a seasoned Veteran’s Advocate from Portland, will be available to assist veterans and dependents with questions about benefits and other information at Windham Veterans Center. She will be on hand on the second and fourth Wednesdays each month. If you have questions of a military nature, stop in and get some answers. The Veterans Center is off Route 302 in back of the Windham Mall.

Craft show, yard sale, farmers market

There will be a Christmas In July Craft Show at the Little Meeting House, 721 Roosevelt Trail, North Windham, on Saturday, July 10, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tables are available for rent for $20 and a homemade pie – or a space (no table) for $15 and a homemade pie. The pies will be sold by the Little Meeting House trustees to raise funds for ongoing expenses and renovations. Call Joan at 615-7315 or 591-5493 to reserve your spot. The Windham Farmers Market is held behind the Little Meeting House and the North Windham Union Church will be having a yard sale next door at the same time as the craft show. Sounds like a one-stop shopping experience!

Park opens for season

Dundee Park is open for the season on weekends and weekdays. Rates are $4 a day for adults, $2 for children. Passes may be purchased at the Windham Parks and Recreation Department at Town Hall, when it is open. The park has many amenities including a great beach area, plenty of picnic tables and grills, a volleyball area, a basketball area, rentals for canoes and paddleboats, all you need for a great family outing.
