BIDDEFORD — It’s been the same story throughout the year with the Kennebunk baseball team. Strong defense and pitching, with a lack of run production. As such, the Rams season has suffered for it.

But not on Thursday.

Kennebunk hit the field against Biddeford on Thursday and awoke the bats enough to pick up a 6-2 victory over the Tigers.

A team that has experienced both peaks and valleys during the 2010 season, the Tigers might have to climb a mountain in order to ensure its spot in the Western Class A playoffs. Biddeford, currently ranked seventh in the Maine Principal Association Heal Point standings, plays its final two games of the regular season against Cheverus, the number eight team, and Bonny Eagle, who were the number two-seeded team until Massabesic picked up the upset win of the year in York County, beating the Scots 4-0 on Thursday. Only the top seven teams will enter the Western Class A playoffs.

Since the team has experienced both highs and lows this year, Tigers head coach Casey Roy doesn’t believe the final two games will put any more pressure on Biddeford.

“As far as pressure goes, I think as far as the kids go, it will just be another game for the next two, and hopefully they show up and they play a little better, with a little more intensity than they did today.”

The Rams (5-9) picked up six runs in the second inning, highlighted by a bases-clearing triple by third baseman Pat Fulford and a two-run single by pitcher Taylor Landry.

“We had a good inning,” Rams head coach Brian Dill said. “We’ve had good games against Biddeford over the years. A lot of teams we haven’t played well against. I think we like playing here, it’s a nice atmosphere here. I’ve felt like we’ve had this potential, and probably think we should have done more of this during the season, but we’ll take it today. It sure feels good. It makes some of the things we’ve struggled with feel good today.”

Fulford said it was nice to get the bats going against the Tigers.

“We’ve haven’t been hitting so well lately, I haven’t been hitting so well, either,” Fulford said. “It was nice to come out and get a triple.”

Biddeford took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning, thanks to an RBI single by Tyler Parker to plate Trevor Fleurent. Kennebunk retaliated with its six-run second inning. After two quick outs, Jack Habzda was hit by a pitch, and Tom Snow and Schuyler Donovan walked, loading the bases. Matt Dube plated Habzda on a fielder’s choice, before Fulford smacked a Nate McKeown pitch off the wall in left field for the three-run triple, making the score 4-1.

“At first I thought it was a pop-fly, but then it just kept carrying,” Fulford said. “I had just hoped it was gone at first.”

Ethan Drigotas was hit by a pitch and stole second base before Landry hit a single to left field, scoring Fulford and Drigotas, upping the Kennebunk lead to 6-1.

The Tigers got one run back in the fourth inning, when Mike Vadnais plated Nick Simpson on an RBI single, making the score 6-2.

Vadnais, who took over on the mound late in the second inning, kept the Rams scoring at bay throughout the rest of the game, limiting Kennebunk to four hits.

While Landry wasn’t overpowering (one strikeout), he pitched to contact, and allowed the Rams defense to secure the win. Landry picked up the complete game victory, keeping Biddeford to six hits, three of which were in the first inning alone.

Landry said his strategy was to keep the walks to a minimum and let his defense do the work.

“Not walk anyone, don’t give them anything too good to hit. I wanted them to put the ball in play,”

The Rams hit the road for a game with Windham on Saturday.
