KITTERY — They scored early, they scored often, and when the dust had finally cleared, they had tallied enough to put an early end to their most lopsided victory of the season.
In sum, Wells had little trouble dispatching Traip Academy, 17-6, in a WMC baseball clash shortened via the mercy rule to six innings.
The Warriors (4-9) jumped to a 7-0 lead after two innings, and were barely challenged after that.
“We had some demoralizing first innings (recently),” said Wells coach Jay Audet. “We’ve given up six or eight runs, and it’s kindof taken the wind out of our sails. So we really wanted to get off to a
great start. That was big.”
Three runs came in on one swat by catcher Louie Di Tomasso off Rangers’
starter Riley Sheahan.
It came with one run already in, and men on second and third.DiTomasso waited for a pitch to his liking and turned on it.
“His first pitch was a fastball,” DiTomasso said. “The next one was a curve. I was expecting it.”
Wells scratched out three more runs in the second without getting a hit. All of them scored from third on wild pitches.
In all, five Warriors came in via that route. It appeared at that point that Wells could have simply named the score.
However, Traip (7-4) pulled back into contention, scoring once in the bottom of the second, then creeping to within 7-5 in the bottom of the third.
“They did come back,” said Audet. “That’s a natural tendency, to have a little bit of a let down. When you are up (by) six early, not that you are knowingly relaxing, but you’re not 100 percent
focused.”
DiTomasso said that getting pitcher Cole Boston back on track wasn’t too difficult.
“In the beginning,” said DiTomasso, “they were hitting his curveball pretty good. They couldn’t really jump on his fastball, so I kept it on the outside. Most of them looked at it. I just kept calling for it, and
they kept missing.” Boston and reliever Kevin Woods (who came on in the fourth) allowed just one run after the third.
“Louie calls a really nice game,” said Audet.
Wells tacked on four more runs in the fifth, then added six more ”“ two on a Paul McDonough home run ”“ in the sixth to complete the rout. The Warriors will host Freeport, Wednesday.
