Antique valentines
Beautiful and nostalgic antique valentines are on display at the Windham Public Library through March 19. Sue Wilson has exhibited an assortment of valentines that were given to her aunt, Ida Dimond, dating around 1923-1930. The valentines were given by other students at Ida’s grade school in Curryville, Pa. The community was settled by German descendants in the 1700s, and many of the valentines on display were printed in Germany. There is also a photograph of Ida and her classmates from the grade. Stop by the library for a look at this timely and interesting collection. Call the library at 892-1908 for more information. The library is located at 217 Windham Center Road.
Free program
Simple Hand Tools will be the topic of Windham Historical Society’s next public program to be held at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 20, at the public library. Ray Philpot will talk about the implements we’ve taken for granted all these years. A refreshment break after the presentation will be followed by a business meeting. The public is welcome to attend; there is no fee but donations are always welcome and needed. The library is handicapped accessible.

Plans are to start the garden in the spring on an acre of town land near the skate park on Route 202 (Gray Road). For more information, call Marge Govoni, cell 310-4117 or home 892-7192 or Paul Tringali, cell 831-1395 or home 892-2878.
At the library
Artwork by Nancy Chadbourne is currently on display at the Windham Public Library. Chadbourne was a student and friend of Pat Riley, who recently passed away. “Two things I admire most since my move to Windham,” Chadbourne says, “is the library and my friend and mentor Pat Riley… she was a warm, jolly and beautiful person and will always be missed by her many friends nationwide. She was a person of note!” Chadbourne will be devoting the month of February to paintings she did at the Pat Riley Studios. Then, during the months of March and April, she will be showing a different assortment of her paintings at the library. Her artwork will be on display through April 30. For more information, call the library at 892-1908.
Snowshoes needed
Manchester School is participating in the Let’s Go 5-2-1-0 Health and Fitness Program. They have been able to purchase some new snowshoes through a grant, but would like to collect more for fourth- and fifth-graders to use. If anyone has new or gently used snowshoes they’d like to donate, please drop them off at the school on Route 302, North Windham.
Free clothing – for all ages
The newly renovated Windham Clothes Closet is open Fridays from 10 a.m. until noon for Windham residents and residents of neighboring towns. It is located in the lower level of the Human Resources building, on Route 202, across from Friends Church. The new entrance is around the building and on the lower level at the back door. Donations are being accepted and now may be left at the back of the building. All items in the Clothes Closet are free. Seniors who come to the food pantry on Thursday morning may also access the food pantry at that time to avoid multiple trips.
Donations needed for yard sale
Madeline has started planning for the 4th Annual Yard Sale on May 8. Did you get a Christmas gift you did not necessarily want? Please don’t throw away the singing fish, dancing plant, or chia pet you may have received – bring it to the clothes closet and food pantry for the yard sale! Donations that would be appreciated include small appliances, dish sets, knick knacks, jewelry, lamps, sports equipment, small furniture or just anything a family can pick up at little cost. This will help raise money for the pantry. The sale in 2009 made $1700 which was designated for Christmas. Thanks to that support, 326 children benefited. It appears 2010 will have more demand for services. Yard sale donations will be accepted now through April 30 for the May 8 sale.
Want to save some money?
North Windham Union Church runs a thrift shop downstairs in the church building on Route 302, North Windham. Everything is very neatly organized and reasonably priced. Hours are Saturday 10 a.m. to noon, Wednesday and Thursday from 1-3 p.m.
News, please
We know a lot of people in Windham, but we don’t know all the news. We don’t know when people go to the hospital or are recuperating – unless you let us know! Often times, a cheerful card would be welcome. When your group or church or family has an event worth talking about – let us know! All nonprofit organizations can list their meetings here – but please adhere to the deadline (the Friday before the following Friday publication date).
