A Bridgton man was sentenced today in U.S. District Court to 60 months in prison for robbing the Bangor Savings Bank in Cornish earlier this year, according to United States Attorney Paula D. Silsby.

Matthew Jarvinen, 24, will also serve three years of supervised release for the robbery on March 27. U.S. District Court Judge D. Brock Hornby imposed the sentence following Jarvinen’s guilty plea entered on May 26, Silsby said in a press release.

Just after 1 p.m. on March 27 a robbery was reported at the Bangor Savings Bank branch at 180 Maple Street. Jarvinen, wearing a dark sweatshirt and dark aviator-style sunglasses with gold frames, passed the bank teller a note stating, “Give me all the money in the drawer, I don’t want to have to hurt you, but I will if I have to.”

The teller complied with the demand and gave Jarvinen around $3,280 in cash, the release said. Law enforcement officers with the York County Sheriff’s Office, Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office and Federal Bureau of Investigation responded to the scene and soon learned that a man fitting Jarvinen’s description recently stopped at a local convenience store and sought directions to the nearest bank.

Law enforcement officers received a photograph of the man from the store’s surveillance system and immediately recognized the male as Jarvinen. Law enforcement subsequently obtained still photographs of the robbery from the bank’s surveillance system and matched them to Jarvinen.

Through the subsequent investigation, law enforcement recovered around $1,200 of the stolen money.
