There is a new face at the head of the Scarborough High School swim team, and it is someone who is very familiar with the program.

On July 16, the Board of Education confirmed the appointment of former Scarborough swimmer Sean Flaherty as the new swim coach at the school.

Flaherty began swimming for the Red Storm in 1999, and he still holds state, class and conference records from his four-year tenure at the school. While this is Flaherty’s first time as a high school head coach, he has coached swimming since 2004 in Arlington, Va. and, for the past year-and-a-half, he has coached at Coastal Maine Aquatics in Cape Elizabeth and South Portland.

“This is an exciting opportunity for me to give back to the school and the sport that has afforded me so much,” said Flaherty in a release. “A tradition of excellence has grown in Scarborough swimming over the last decade, much of it thanks to former head coaches Tim Kipp and Bill Stone.”

“I’ve got some big shoes to fill, that goes without saying,” Flaherty continued. “I was always proud to represent Scarborough as a swimmer. I hope I can motivate our swimmers to be just as proud now that it is their turn. Most importantly, it will be my job to keep up the tradition of great sportsmanship that our swim teams have always been known for.”
