A Naples man died Wednesday night after his van went off the road and burst into flames in Harrison, according to the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office.
Joshua R. Babbitt, 28, was traveling southbound in a 1996 Dodge Caravan at around 7 p.m. on the Edes Falls Road in Harrison when the vehicle crossed the oncoming lane and went off the road, striking several trees, according to a press release from the Sheriff’s Office. The van then burst into flames.
Motorists that came upon the accident removed Babbitt, who was unresponsive, from the vehicle and dragged him to a safe distance from the vehicle, the release said. First aid was administered by the individuals until Harrison Fire-Rescue arrived, but Babbitt was pronounced dead at the scene.
One of the individuals who helped remove Babbitt from the van was transported by ambulance to Bridgton Hospital for minor smoke inhalation.
The accident is being reconstructed by the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office.
