The seventh-grade math team from GNG Middle School earned its second trophy of the year when it competed recently against 24 other teams at the Southern Maine Elementary Math League spring meet. The team came in second! The team, coached by seventh-grade teacher Jackie Douglas, includes Jake LaCerda, Jesse Lowell, Brandon Buck, Casey Myhaver, Brianna Heisler and Carolyn Liziewski, also received a trophy for the third-highest individual score at the meet. The team has worked hard this year. Congratulations!

Rock, as

in music

Fiddlehead Center offers young musicians the opportunity to play in a rock band in an upcoming Rock Camp. The camp is open to musicians age 10 and up and all instruments and vocals are welcome. The students will learn and perform rock tunes in a band setting, how to be comfortable playing with other musicians on stage, how to create a stage presence and more. Students will be grouped by age level and experience.

Cost of the camp is $165 and it runs from June 29 through July 3 from 6 to 8 p.m., culminating in a family and friends performance at the last class. Instructor is Alex Adams.

Give and take

Fiddlehead Center Yard Sale will be held on Saturday, June 13, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., in the parking area at Fiddlehead Center at 25 Shaker Road. Donations of items will be accepted on Friday, June 12, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday, June 13, from 7:30 a.m. to 9 a.m. UFOs – unfinished objects/projects – and craft items are also welcome. Receipts for donations will be provided.

The yard sale is a fundraiser for Fiddlehead Center’s scholarship program. For more information call 657-2244.

Kristen O’Gara won the certificate for $200 worth of fuel oil after donating blood at the May 20 drive co-sponsored by the Gray/New Gloucester Lions and Steinert Energy. Her name was drawn from more than 140 potential donors. The blood drive, held at Newbegin Gym in Gray, yielded 128 pints. Thank you to all who participated!

those in need

The Community Food Pantry will be open Friday, June 19, 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. The pantry, located in the Gray Congregational Parish House is open the first and third Friday of each month. For more information, call 657-4279.

Meet your past

Genealogy is the topic at the Gray Library on Wednesdays from 2-8 p.m.; and don’t forget, the library has passes to the Portland Museum of Art, Children’s Museum of Maine, Maine Wildlife Park and Southworth Planetarium. Meanwhile, sign-ups for the Summer Reading Program will be under way the week of June 22 to help you keep busy this summer.

Swim on

Red Cross swim lessons will be held at Wilkies Beach on Tuesdays/Wednesdays and Thursdays. Lessons start June 30 and end July 30. Fees are $40/family; $25/individual.

Registration will be held at Wilkies Beach on Friday, June 12, 6-7 p.m. and on Saturday, June 20, 9-10 a.m. Swim lessons are available for all area children. The times for each group will be available at registration. For more information call Lisa at 657-3430.

Flies and fish

On Saturday, June 13, at the Maine Wildlife Park, Route 26 in Gray, you can learn to tie a fly and fly-cast for fish. Sebago Trout Unlimited (TU) Chapter members will be on hand to teach techniques.

The following Saturday, June 20, will be Fish and Wildlife Day at the Maine Wildlife Park, from 9:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Join Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife biologists, game wardens, safety personnel and hatchery staff to enjoy a variety of special exhibits and displays.

Scholarships

On Thursday, June 4, the graduates of the Gray-New Gloucester class of 2009 held Senior Night at the high school. John Couture of State Farm Insurance in Gray, representing the Gray-New Gloucester Business Association, awarded two scholarships, one in the amount of $750 and the other for $1,000. The recipients are required to show high academic standards, community service and good citizenship, and write an essay explaining what they plan to do with their education. Owen Chaplin, who plans to study engineering, and Elyse Doyle, whose major is still undecided, were the recipients. The GNGBA congratulates these two fine individuals and the class of 2009.
