The Bonny Eagle High softball team closed the season with wins in 11 of its final 12 games, including a pair of recent big ones over Gorham and Thornton Academy, followed by a close victory over Massabesic in the finale.

On Saturday, the Scots got a Heal Point-heavy 7-0 road win over Gorham that allowed them to tie the Rams in the latest standings.

“I had the kids in the gym at 7:30 in the morning,” said Scots coach Jan Corliss. “They came in and hit off the machine and were all fired up, thinking they could beat that team and that’s what they did.”

Bonny Eagle followed that up with a 4-3 road win over playoff-bound Thornton on Monday before topping Massabesic 2-0 on Tuesday in Standish to finish 12-4. The Scots are still awaiting word on their final seeding for in the Class A West tournament, which begins next week.

Tuesday’s game against the Mustangs (3-13) provided a change of pace for Bonny Eagle after facing power pitchers from Gorham and Thornton. Massabesic pitcher Jordyn Dumont’s slower offerings had the Scots hitters anxious to swing away.

“We were excited at the different speed of the pitching, too excited,” Corliss said. While Bonny Eagle managed nine hits, the team wasn’t able string many together to produce runs. The Scots made contact, but hit balls right at fielders or popped them up.

“We would have been a little more comfortable defensively if we could have put some more runs across,” Corliss said.

Still, the Scots, who were wearing homemade T-shirts with nicknames and numbers stenciled on for senior day, got the job done. LaShawna Jackson walked, stole second, went to third on a wild pitch and scored on an error in the third inning to make it 1-0. Connie Grovo’s RBI single in the sixth that scored Jordan VanRosendael gave Bonny Eagle a late insurance run.

Sarah Bissonnette started and pitched five innings for Bonny Eagle, striking out seven and allowing four hits. After the Mustangs loaded the bases in the top of the first on two walks and a single, Bissonnette struck out the next three hitters to escape trouble.

Hannah Goodale came on to start the sixth for the Scots. After allowing a single and a walk, she buckled down to fan the next three Massabesic hitters. The Mustangs also had two on with one out in the seventh, but Goodale got a strikeout and a ground out to end the game.

VanRosendael had three hits for Bonny Eagle. Grovo had two, including a double. Abby Harnik singled twice for Massabesic. Both teams made two errors.

Final standings were not available as of this edition’s deadline. If the Scots end up in the top four, they will play in the SMAA tournament semifinals on Saturday for a spot in the league championship next Monday. The SMAA tournament has no bearing on the Class A West tournament.

The Class A West tournament gets underway next week, with prelims scheduled for Tuesday and the quarterfinals on Thursday. As Corliss sees it, there are a number of teams that could get hot and win the regional title.

“It is wide open,” she said. “The seedings are going to matter and who shows up to play on what day is going to matter. Anybody can win it. It’s going to be interesting.”
