Along with May flowers, April showers bring with them a more immediate and less desirable result: rainouts.
The baseball and softball teams from Lake Region and Gray-New Gloucester high schools were scheduled to meet Wednesday in Western Maine Conference action in Gray, but with fields soaked from Tuesday’s rain and more showers forecasted, the games were pushed to Thursday, after the Lakes Region Weekly’s deadline.
The Gray-New Gloucester baseball team won its opener on Saturday, rallying in the bottom of the seventh inning to slide past North Yarmouth Academy, 4-3. After playing host to the Lakers on Thursday, the Patriots are slated to visit Wells today (April 24). Lake Region, which fell to Wells 8-1 in its opener on April 16, is scheduled to host Greely today.
The Lake Region softball team lost its opener at Wells, 5-4. After taking on the Patriots on Thursday (the opener for Gray-New Gloucester), the Lakers are hosting Greely today.
Today and Saturday are the opening days for most baseball and softball teams in the SMAA. The Bonny Eagle softball team is slated to host Scarborough today at 4 p.m. in a game between two teams that figure to be near the top of the league. Windham softball will open Monday at Noble.
In baseball, Bonny Eagle plays at Noble in an early one on Saturday, with first pitch scheduled for 11 a.m. Windham has a stern test to start the year, playing defending Class A state champ Deering at 6 p.m. on Saturday at Hadlock Field in Portland.
The WMC tennis season is already underway, but the SMAA teams are kicking things off next week. The Windham boys, with six players back from last year’s team that went undefeated in the regular season, is on a quest to atone for last year’s semifinal exit from the postseason. The Eagles host Thornton Academy at 3:30 p.m. on Monday. The Windham girls play at Thornton at the same time. Also on Monday, the Bonny Eagle boys open at home against Massabesic while the girls play at McAuley.
Lacrosse action also begins next week. The Windham girls play at Gorham on Monday.
On Tuesday, the Bonny Eagle boys host Wells while the girls play at Wells. Also on Tuesday, the Windham boys, in their first season at the varsity level, open at Waynflete in Portland.
Outdoor track is also set to start. On Tuesday, the Windham girls host Biddeford, Sanford and South Portland. The Bonny Eagle girls venture down to Marshwood for a meet that also includes McAuley, Cheverus and Westbrook on Tuesday. The Scots boys open Wednesday at Westbrook with Cheverus and Marshwood. The Eagles boys are at South Portland with Biddeford and Sanford on Wednesday.
