Sylvia Talbott, a senior at Lake Region High School and daughter of Celia and Fred Talbott of Naples, has been selected as the Principals’ Award recipient for the Class of 2009, Principal Roger Lowell announced recently. This senior award recognizes outstanding academic achievement and citizenship.

Talbott, who ranks at the top of her class academically, certainly meets the first requirement. Last spring when the Student Council reorganized in preparation for the 2008-2009 school year, she stepped forward and expressed a strong interest in helping the group address important school issues.

Under Talbott’s leadership, the Student Council has accomplished great things. From coordinating a massive pumpkin carving effort in the fall in support of Camp Sunshine to the institution of quarterly school-wide student recognition assemblies, Talbott and the council members took on significant projects and followed through with their plans. This year’s Student Council has taken action that has had a major, positive impact on individual students, the school and the community. As president, Talbott should take a share of the credit for these accomplishments.

Talbott’s grade point average and list of achievements are surely impressive but her vision, leadership and follow through are capabilities that are rare indeed. She is an outstanding scholar whose service to the school is exceptional.

Next year, Sylvia hopes to attend Bowdoin College and major in biology.
