As there are every season, there were highs and lows, victories and defeats for the athletes this winter at Windham High School
The Eagles had a winning season on the hardwood, as both the boys and girls qualified for the Class A state tournament before falling in the quarterfinals at the Portland Expo.
The No. 5 Windham girls lost their quarterfinal contest against No. 4 Noble, 35-21. The Eagles, coming off a 4-14 season a year ago, finished 11-8. Their season included upset wins over No. 2 Scarborough and No. 3 Biddeford. Led by senior forward Riley Graves and her propensity for late-game heroics, the Eagles surprised much of the league with their success. They started two freshmen guards in Meghan Gribbin and Stephanie Frost. The young backcourt duo will be one to watch in the future.
The No. 7 Windham boys finished at 12-8, defeating Gorham in a prelim playoff game before losing to No. 2 Westbrook 58-42 in the quarterfinals. The Eagles weren’t sure where their scoring would come from when the season began, but junior guard Garrett Clemmer soon established himself as one of the SMAA’s top scorers, averaging close to 18 points a game.
Swimming
The Windham girls finished third at the Southwestern South swim meet, while the boys took fifth at the same meet. The boys got a pair of wins at the meet as Nathan Paluso won the 200-yard freestyle and Lance Webster won the 100 freestyle. The Eagles tallied 82 points at the boys Class A state meet, while the girls had 61. The team swam its home meets at the St. Joe’s College pool for the first time this season. The Eagles will look to build on their success in the pool next winter.
Wrestling
On the mat, the Eagles placed seventh at the West A regional meet in Kurt Pelletier’s return to coaching after spending seven years as an official. Windham qualified a pair of wrestlers for the Class A state meet. Jacob Greenwood placed fourth at 189 pounds. Patrick Pearson competed at 160 pounds.
Indoor track
The Windham boys placed 14th at the Class A state meet, scoring 13 points. Eric O’Connor placed third in the pole vault. Patrick Ciez took fourth in the high jump and sixth in the triple jump. Mike Pottle was seventh in the long jump. The girls finished 15th with four points. Katie Cook took fourth in the pole vault.
