Fans of Sebago Lake Rotary Club Ice Racing will have to wait an extra week for the exciting event featuring cars and motorcycles roaring around an ice track.
Originally scheduled for Friday, Feb. 20, to coincide with the Maine WinterFest and Chevrolet Derby that is centered around Sebago Lake this weekend, the ice racing will instead be held Saturday, Feb. 28. The delay will give organizers a chance to repair the ice track that has been constructed in “Grondin’s Pit” on Enterprise Drive in Windham.
“That rainstorm we had eroded the base and we knew we wouldn’t have enough time to bring it back to have enough ice by Friday,” said organizer Tom Noonan, adding that he is confident they can pull it off.
“I wouldn’t be down there flooding it until midnight if I didn’t think so,” he said.
This will mark the first time in five years of racing that Sebago Lake Rotary Club Ice Racing will not be held on frozen Sebago Lake. The 1/3-mile track at “Grondin’s Pit” will be lit by fourteen light towers that will shine down on the track as cars from the New Meadows Ice Racing Association and dirt bikes from the Pine Tree Trail Riders take their turns starting at 6:30 p.m. Racing, Noonan said, should end at around 10 p.m.
Food vendors and warming fires will also be available for spectators, who can watch all the races for a $5 entry fee.
“That’s cheap entertainment,” said Noonan, who expects a big crowd of racers. “Last year, we had a plenty full slate.”
Previously, the ice races were held on the lake at Point Sebago. To clear that spot, Noonan said, workers would spend over 10 days and 1,300 gallons of diesel to get rid of all the snow.
Also causing an issue on the ice were the snowbanks, which weigh down the area and allow water to seep up onto the track, Noonan said.
“On land we don’t have that issue,” he said.
